Types of Proteins Flashcards
What type of protein is Haemoglobin?
Globular
What are prosthetic groups?
Inorganic groups (like iron) that are attached onto the protein (non-protein themselves)
Structure of Haemoglobin?
Has 2 alpha chains and 2 beta chains ; forming an alpha helix shape
Position of Heme groups?
These iron Fe2+ ions are in the middle of the porphyrin rings
Catalase structure?
Quarternary structure consist of 4 polypeptide chains with 4 heme groups
Function of catalase
Produced in liver and breaks down harmful hydrogen peroxide (result of metabolism) into water and oxygen preventing it from accumulating and damaging DNA
Insulin structure
Insulin is formed of 2 polypeptide chains (quaternary structure) and both are joined together by main disulphides bridges
Properties of insulin?
It is a globular protein and thus is soluble - very compact and has role in reactions with a wider range of amino acids (making it globular instead of a smaller repetitive range for structural)
How is insulin arranged?
Hydrophobic R groups in the middle and hydrophilic on the outside
