types of practice Flashcards
what is massed practice
involves continuous practice without rest periods
when should mass practice be used in relation to the skills and performers it’s used for
when the skills are: discrete, closed, self paced, simple
when performers are: highly motivated, physically fit and autonomous
what are the advantages and disadvantages of using masses practice
advantages: grooves skill so skill becomes habitual, motor programmes are formed, fitness improved
disadvantages: caused fatigue, performer may be physically unable to undertake this practice, no time for feedback
what is distributed practice
involved practice with rest periods included
when should distributed practice be used in terms of the skills and performers
when skills are: continuous, complex, serial, low organisation, dangerous/tiring, externally paced, open
when performers are: cognitive, unfit, lacking motivation
what are the advantages and disadvantages of using distributed practice
advantages: motivational, allows time for physical recovery, allows time for mental practice, coach can give feedback
disadvantages: time consuming m, can cause negative transfer
what is variable practice
involves practicing skills and drills in a constantly changing evnviroment, e.g. when practicing a 3 vs 2 attacking play in rugb
in terms of skills and performers when should variable practice be used
when skills are open, externally paced and complex
when the performer is cognitive or lacking motivation
what are the advantages and disadvantages of using variable practice
advantages: develops schema(mental concept), increases motivation, performer gains experience in a range of situations, positive transfer from training to game
disadvantages: time consuming, can cause fatigue, possibility of information overload, can cause negative transfer
what is mental practice
involves going over the skill in your mind without moving
what is internal and external mental practice
internal is seeing your performance from within, through your own eyes and being aware of ur emotions, external is seeing your performance from the outside as a spectator(mentally)
in terms of skills and performers when should mental practice be used
when skills are complex serial
when performers are cognitive- to build a clear mental image of the basics of the skill or autonomous- to focus on clear strategies and tactics
what are the advantages and disadvantages of using mental practice
advantages: produces a clear mental image, performer can see themselves being successful, increased confidence, reduces anxiety, reaction time improves
disadvantages: difficult for cognitive performers to complete effectively, mental image must be accurate, difficult if environment is not quiet
