stages of learning Flashcards
give me a detailed description on what the cognitive stage of learning is
performer begins to create clear image, mistakes are made, mental rehearsal of skill is required, accurate demonstration is necessary, perfumer uses trial and error, movements appear uncoordinated and jerky, motor programmes are not yet formed
give me a detailed description on what the associative stage of learning is
performer must continue to practice, some never progress out of this stage, become more proficient with fewer mistakes, motor programmes are developing being stored in long term memory, positive feedback demonstrations and mental rehearsal are still required to aid learning
give me a detailed description on what the autonomous stage of learning is
movements are fluent and efficient and habitual due to extensive practice, skills are executed automatically without consciously thinking about subroutines, motor programmes are fully formed stored in long term memory, focusing on fine detail now, must continue practicing and rehearsing
in terms of feedback how might a cognitive performer respond
reliant on extrinsic feedback from their coach to direct there performance and highlight weaknesses, feedback should be positive, some knowledge of results can be used to successful actions are repeated and unsuccessful actions are modified
in terms of feedback how might an associative performer respond
performer begins to develop kinaesthesis and uses intrinsic feedback to correct movement, extrinsic feedback is used to refine actions, performer begins to use knowledge of performance
in terms of feedback how might an autonomous performer respond
performer uses intrinsic feedback to correct their own mistakes mu means if kinaesthesis, extrinsic feedback may be negative to aid error correction, use of knowledge of performance to understand why the action was (un)successful
what is stage 1 of the learning plateau
during the first 2.5mins the performer is in the cognitive phase of learning and their success rate will be low, they’ll be slow and jerky when performing and trying to work out parts of skill and developing an understanding
what happens in stage 2 of the learning plateau
until 7.5mins there’s a sharp increase in their success rate as they begin to grasp the skill, they enter the associative phase of learning and look more fluid when performing, motivation levels are high as they recognise their being successful
what happens in stage 3 of the learning plateau
at 15mins the performer reaches a plateau where they’re no longer progressing with the skill and no further improvement is shown
what happens in stage 4 of the learning plateau
at 20mins there’s a dip in their success rate, a lack of motivation and a drive reduction, to demotivate they require a new task or challenge
what are the solutions of loss of motivation/boredom in the learning plateau
set new tasks/challengers, use variable practice, offer tangible rewards
what are the solutions of metal/physical fatigue in the learning plateau
allow performer to rest, use distributed practice
what are the solutions of reaching the learning limit in the learning plateau
allowing the performer to compete against others of a similar ability
what are the solutions of poor coaching in the learning plateau
try a variety of coaching methods, use an alternative coach
what are the solutions of incorrect goals set in the learning plateau
set goals using the SMARTER principle
