The memory system Flashcards

1
Q

What does the memory system do

A

Stores and retrieves information, makes comparisons with previous movement experiences and selects which motor programme to retrieve to produce desired movement

Q

What does the central executive do

A

maintains overall control, links with LTM and switches attention if required but has limited capacity, identified which information should go into which of the 3subsystems to perform different functions

Q

what does the phonological loop do

A

Deals with auditory information e.g processes the call from your teammate, it’s a temporary storage system which creates a memory trace which is send to the LTM to trigger a motor programme.(memory trace will fade away if not rehearsed)

Q

What is the visuospatial sketchpad

A

Holds visual and spatial information temporarily e.g. images of set plays and where u would be during the action and also stores kinaesthetic information about how the movement feels

Q

What does the episodic buffer do?

A

Stores 3-4 chunks or ‘episodes’, allows different parts of the memory system to talk to each-other and !produces sequences of information! to sent to the LTM which initiates the motor programme. Also gather’s perceptual information such as the flight speed of the ball or the sound ‘man on’ from the coach or how the limbs and muscles feel as you move to receive the pass

Q

What is chaining and chunking

A

chaining is when the elements are presented together to make it easy to remember in an organised manager, eg. elements are practiced together full tramp routine. chunking is when small groups of information and grouped together to expand the capacity of the short term memory. e.g. 3-4 movements learnt together in a trampolining routine

Q

Explain the overall process of working memory model

A

working memory receives relevant information that’s been filtered via selective attention, can only store 5-9 items for 30s, if a skill is rehersed it’s transferred to LTM as a motor programme, WMM produced memory trace of current skill which is compared to previous noor stored in LTM, LTM is unlimited time and capacity, it send motor programmes to working memory which initiates the motor programme

Q

What is the difference between STSS(short-term sensory memory story) and STM(short-term memory)

A

STSS stores lots of info filters through selective attention before moving towards STM and holds info for 0.5-1second and short term memory holds 5-9 for 20-30s and requests motor programmes from LTM(which sends requested info to STM) and runs our motor programmes
