Types of Observations Flashcards
What is a controlled observation?
When the environment is maipulated by the researcher.
What is a strength and weakness for controlled observations?
-High in reliability
-Low ecological validity
What is a naturalistic observation?
Watching natural behaviour in the natural environment where it would naturally occur.
What are strength and weakness of naturalistic observations?
-High ecological validity
-Low in reliability
What is a overt observation?
Ppt are aware that research is being carried out and the researcher is visible.
What is a strength and a weakness of overt observations?
-ethically appropriate
-Demand characteristics
What is a covert observation?
ppt are unaware thst there being watched and the obsever etiher becomes part of the group or hide
What is a weakness and a strength.
-less prone to demand characteristics
-lack of informed consent
What is participant observation?
When the searcher is part of the group and collects data at the same time.
What is a strength and weakness of participant observations?
-gain in depth understanding
-researcher bias
What is non participant observation?
When the researcher is not part of research and data is collected from a distance.
WHat is a strength and weakness of non participant observations?
-less likely to be researcher bias
-unable to gain in depth understanding
