Experimental Designs Flashcards
What is independent groups?
ppt take part in only one condition.
How do they gain a sample in independant groups?
-recruit
-split into equal sized groups
-put each in different conditions
What is an advantage of independent groups?
No order effects only take part in one condition so can’t become bored or fatigued leading to lasting effect.
What is a disadvantage of independent groups
Individual differences have effect on the DV as ppt take part in one condition e.g higher IQ
What is repeated measures?
ppt take part in all conditions
How is repeated measures carried out?
-ppt complete one condition
-after sufficient time do the next one
-task is different but difficulty is the same
What is a strength of repeated measures?
No individual differences as ppt take part in both conditions so researcher is aware any change is due to the IV.
What is a weakness of repeated measures?
Order effect ppt take part in both conditions can become bored/ fatigue having lasting effect on next condition lowering the IV
What is a matched pairs?
-matched on characteristics and paired based on task scores
-randomly allocated
How is it carried out?
-match based on characteristics
-carry out a test
-put them in pairs based on same scores
-and pairs are randomly allocated to a condition
What is a strength of Matched pairs?
Reduced individual differences as matched based on characteristics so any change to DV is due to IV
What is a weakness of matched pairs?
Time consuming to match ppt especially if there is a pre test needed also large pool sample
