Experimental Methods Flashcards
What is a Lab experiment?
-highly controlled environment
-manipulate iv to see effect on DV
What is a strength of Lab experiments?
High control over extraneous variables e.g lights which means cause and effect can be established increasing IV
What is a Weakness of Lab experiments?
Low ecological validity artificial environment difficult to generalize the findings lowering the EV.
What is a field experiment?
-natural environment of the ppt
-manipulate IV to see its effect on the DV
What is a strength of field experiments?
High ecological validity
carried out in the real life environment of ppt easier to generalize the findings increasing IV
What is a weakness of Field experiments?
Low Reliability natural environment difficult to carry out in the exact same conditions so unable to find consistent results
What is a natural experiment?
When they take advantage of a naturally occurring event.
What is a strength of natural experiments?
High ecological validity takes place in real life setting easier to generalize the findings increasing the external validity.
What is a weakness of natural experiments?
Low control over extraneous variables carried out in a natural environment cause and effect coudlnt be established lowering the internal validity
What is a Quasi experiment?
-iv is based on existing individual differences between people
-researcher doesn’t manipulate
What is a weakness of quasi experiment?
sample bias where they may have unique characteristics difficult to generalize to the target population lowering the external validity
