Self Reports Flashcards
What is a investigator effect?
-investigators behavior can have conscious or unconscious influence of the outcome of research
-e.g there gender or tone can effect how participants respond
What are ways to prevent this?
-train experimenters to have a neutral tone
-same gender as ppt
-double blind, another researcher who doesn’t know the aim carries it out
What is an interview?
Method of asking questions usually face to face nature but also can be done online, two types structure and unstructured interviews
What is a structured interview?
-pre set questions
-interviewees told same questions in the same order
-can’t ask questions based on information given
What is a strength of structured interviews?
Asked the same questions in the same order allows to compare and identify trends and patterns easily
What is a weakness of structured interviews?
So they cannot deviate from the questions given so therefore cant have a full understanding of behavior.
What is an Unstructured interview?
-can have topics of discussion but no set questions
-questions are based on the information that the interviewee gives
-open questions
What is a strength of Unstructured interviews?
Because the questions are based on the answers that the interviewee gives there able to gain a full understanding of behavior.
What is a weakness of Unstructured interviews?
A weakness is that it is difficult to identify and compare patterns and trends because participants are being asked different questions makes it harder to analyze
What is a strength of open questions/ qualitative data?
Provides in depth rich and detailed data giving a better understanding of behavior.
What is a weakness of open questions/ qualitative data?
Researcher bias as the participants response is open to subjective interpretation
What is a strength of closed question/ quantitative data?
Easier to analyze and collate the data to identify patterns and trends
What is a weakness of closed question/ quantitative data?
Lacks depth and detailed data lacking validity.
What is a strength of Questionaires?
Allows us to delve into sensitive topics where in which participants are able to remain anonymous and so there more likely to be honest increases the internal validity.
Weakness of questionaires?
Social desirability bias where ppt may want to present themselves in the best light lowering the internal validity.
What is a self report?
-ppt give information providing details to the researcher
-responding to question or interview
-open or closed questions or it can be structured and unstructured interviews
