Types of Networks Flashcards
What is a network
It is when two or more computing devices are connected together in order to share resources
What are the two types of networks
Local Area Network (LAN)
Wide Area Network (WAN)
When do you use a LAN Network
When two or more enabled devices are connected within a close geographical range
What are the advantages of using LAN
-A user can log on from any workstation and still access all their files
-Peripherals and file can be
shared between users
- Data can be transmitted between users quickly
- Anti-virus and malware check can be carried out from the server rather than each individual PC
What are the disadvantages of using LAN
- Network failure - If one file server fails then no one can access their files
- Slow service - If lots of users are logged on then the network slows down
- Cost - Very expensive to set up and keep running
- Security - Users might not log out of their account and could give unauthorised person access to all their files
How would you improve security on a LAN
- Passwords - Create strong passwords and change them frequently
- Backups - Central backups should be made regularly this way a rollback or restore of files can be made
- Encryption - Data should be encrypted especially if hubs are being used this is because all the data is broadcast to all the devices on the network
When do you use a WAN Network
When two or more enabled devices are connected in a different geographical area
What are the advantages of using WAN
- Allows LANs to connect to each other
- Allows users to collaborate over a wide area
- Allows data to be shared between LANS
What are the disadvantages of using WAN
- Can be expensive
- WAN can be hard to fix if it breaks
