Network Performance Flashcards
What does bandwidth mean
It means how data can be transferred over a connection in a given time
What are the two types of Ethernet cable and explain which is better
Cat-5 - Cheaper but slower
Cat-6 - Expensive but faster
What does a fibre optic cable do
transfer data using light which is reflected along the inside of the cable
How good is the bandwidth for fibre optic
It has very high bandwidth but it is very expensive compared to the Ethernet cable
What is backbone
It joins together a number of LANs in the same building or as part of a WAN, it is expected to carry heavy data traffic
Name some factors that would affect the Wi-Fi’s performance
Radio Interference - If something else is transmitting the same frequency this would lower the performance
Blocked by walls - The thick walls or floors so you may get no connection
Limited connections - Wi-Fi
allocates channels so this limits how many people can go on the Wi-Fi at the same time
What are the advantages of having a wired network
- Allows loads of people to log in at the same time
- Excellent security
- High Bandwidth
- Not affected by building layout
- Immune to radio interference
What are the disadvantages of having a wired network
- Not portable
- It is more expensive
What are the advantages of having a Wi-Fi network
- Cheaper
- Very mobile
What are the disadvantages of having a Wi-Fi network
- Limited number of people on it at once
- Affected by radio interference
- Lower bandwidth
- Not as secure
