What is Local Hosting
Where you host a website on your home PC
How would you set up local hosting
You would need to set up your PC as a web server and allow others to connect to it and access the web files that you store
What are the issues with local hosting
- Bandwidth - Might not be able to provide strong connection for everyone
- The PC will be always on -can’t use sleep mode
- Firewall - Easy to hack the PC
- Dynamic IP - The IP would keep changing this mean there would be no permanent IP to be used to connect to the server
What is external hosting
It is where you pay a web hosting company to host your website on one of their servers
What are the different types of external hosting
Shared web hosting - this is where many sites are hosted on the same web server
Dedicated server - Where the website is hosted on its own server
Virtual Server - This is a powerful server that runs special software to create many ‘virtual servers’ within itself
What does the ‘cloud’ do’
refers to a range of software and services that run on the internet rather than your PC
Give some example of cloud services
- Online hosting of web page data
- Online file and media storage (GoogleDrive)
- Streaming services of films and other media (Spotify, Netflix or Amazon)
- Online applications (Office 365, Google Docs)
What are the advantages of Cloud Computing
- You can access your data from any device with an internet connection
- Documents can be worked on simultaneously by different people
- You can store large files online and reduce the amount of storage space needed on your home device
- Your work is automatically backed up
What are the disadvantages of Cloud Computing
- Must require an internet connection
- Must remember the login details
- Most of the services cost money
- Risk of online hackers
