Storage Flashcards
Why do we need secondary storage
Because RAM is volatile, any data being stored will disappear so if a copy need to be retained secondary storage retains a copy of programs and data that need to kept long term
What is a secondary storage device
is the physical hardware that carries out the storage action
Name secondary storage devices
Solid State Drive
A Hard Disk
What are the advantages of magnetic storage
Huge capacity
Low cost
High speed
What are the disadvantages of magnetic storage
Not portable
Has mechanical moving
part
data can be lost
What are the advantages of optical storage
Cheap
Portable
Ideally sized
What are the disadvantages of optical storage
Slow to burn
Easily scratched
Cannot write over data
What are the advantages of solid state storage
Portable
Large capacity
Faster than hard disk
silent
What are the disadvantages of solid state storage
expensive
less durable
How do you calculate storage
megabytes / megabyte of file = x
How would you decide is the best storage media
Capacity - The amount of data that can be stored
Speed - How quickly the data can be accessed
Portability- Can the media be easily moved about
Durability - How easy is it to damage
Reliability- How long is the shelf life
Cost - How expensive is it
