Network Topologies Flashcards
What is a network topology
the layout of connections in a network
Describe a star topology
The star network has a central device directly connected to all the other nodes
What are the advantages of a star topology
- Very Reliable
- Very few data collisions
- Good security
- Simple to add computers or remove
What are the disadvantages of a star topology
- Expensive
- Extra hardware (Switch or hub)
- If the hub/switch goes down the whole network does
Describe a mesh topology
Each node relays the data it receives to other nodes and there are no central hub
What are the advantages of a star topology
- Very robust
- There is no central node to fail
- It can handle high data traffic
- Data packets can be sent simultaneously
What are the disadvantages of a star topology
- Very expensive
- Lots of cable
Describe a bus topology
Bus topology is a network topology in which all of the various devices in the network are connected to a single cable or line
What are the advantages of a bus topology
- Its easy to set up
- Cheap
- Good for LAN
What are the disadvantages of a bus topology
- Dependant on the central cable
- Efficiency decrease when more computers join
- Cant handle heavy traffic
