Types Of Joints/ Synovial Joints Flashcards
What are the three classes of joints?
Fixed, cartilaginous and synovial joints
What are fixed/ fibrous joints?
Joints that do not move E.g. cranium or coccyx
What are cartilaginous joints?
Slightly movable joints such as the lumbar vertebrae
What are synovial joints?
Joints that can move freely such as limbs. (There are 6 types)
What are the 6 types of synovial joint?
Ball and socket, hinge, pivot, cobdyloid, gliding and saddle
What is a ball and socket joint?
Allowing movement in all directions
What is a hinge joint
Allow movement in only one direction
What is a condyloid joint?
Movement can be produced back and forwards as well as side to side however ligaments can prevent some rotation
What is a gliding joint?
Allow movement over a flat surface in all directions
What is a pivot joint?
A circular bone fits over a peg of another joint to turn side to side
What is a saddle joint?
Similar to a condyloid joint and allows movement backwards and forwards as well as side to side
