What does ossification mean?
The process that bones are formed
What are osteoclasts?
Cells that remove unnecessary amounts of calcium and break down bone tissue
What are osteoblasts?
Cells that bring calcium to your bones and create bone matter
What is osteoporosis?
The weakening of bones caused by lack of vitamins and minerals such as calcium and vitamin D
Why do your bones get stronger with more excersise?
Osteoblast activity increases when you exercise and your bone calcium stores increase to cope with rhe demand for calcium
What are the plates that are on the ends of bones- they allow the bone to grow longer?
Epiphyseal plates
What happens once the long bone is fully formed?
The end of each bone fuses with the main shaft to create the epiphyseal line
