Types of experiment Flashcards
1
Q
What is a field experiment
A
- takes place in a natural setting within which the researcher manipulates the IV
2
Q
What is a natural experiment
A
- where the change of the IV is not done by the researcher but happens naturally
3
Q
What is a quasi-experiment
A
- almost an experiment but lacks key ingredient, IV is not determined by anyone, the variables simple exist
- strictly speaking this is not an experiment
4
Q
What is a lab experiment
A
- an experiment that takes place in a controlled environment
5
Q
1- What is a strength of lab experiments
2- What is a limitation of lab experiments
A
- high control over extraneous variables, high internal validity, replication is more possible
- lack generalisability, low external validity, higher chance of demand characteristics, low mundane realism due to artificial tasks
6
Q
1- What is a strength of field experiments
2- What is a limitation of field experiments
A
- higher mundane realism, high external validity
- loss of control over ev, precise replication is often not possible, important ethical issues, ppts cannot give consent may be invasion of privacy
7
Q
1- What is a strength of natural experiments
2- What is a limitation of natural experiments
A
- high external validity, take on more uncommon experiments
- reproduction of study is hard, not generalisable
8
Q
1- What is a strength of quasi-experiments
2- What is a limitation of quasi-experiments
A
- controlled conditions, share strengths of lab experiments
- cannot randomly allocate ppts, therefore there may be confounding variables
