Sampling Flashcards
what is a target population
- subset of general population
Outline what a random sample is and how the target population is picked
- all members of the target population have an equal chance of being selected, lottery method is used
What is a systematic sample
- when every nth number of the tp is selected, a sampling frame is then produced, a sampling system is nominated, this interval can be randomly determined to reduce bias
for eg every 5th person is picked etc
What is a stratified sample
- researcher first identifies strata
- proportions are worked out
- ppts are randomly selected
What is an opportunity sample
- anyone who is willing is selected
What is volunteer sampling
- when the members from a target population willingly volunteer to take part and so are chosen
1-What is a strength of random sampling
2-What is a limitation of it
- free of researcher bias
- difficult and time-consuming
What is a strength of systematic sampling
- avoids researcher bias, and is usually representative
1-What is a strength of stratified sampling
2-What is a limitation of it
- avoids researcher bias, representative, can be generalisable
- complete representation of target population is not possible
1-What is a strength of opportunity sampling
2-What is a limitation of it
- saves time and money
- unrepresentative of target population, bias as researcher has ability to pick and choose
1-What is a strength of volunteer sampling
2-What is a limitation of it
- easy, minimal input from researcher, less time-consuming
- volunteer bias is a problem
