Experimental design Flashcards
1
Q
What is an independent groups design
A
- ppts are allocated to different groups, representing one experimental condition
2
Q
Define the term repeated measures
A
- all ppts take part in all of the conditions in an experiment
3
Q
What is a matched pairs design
A
- pairs of ppts are matched together on some variables that may effect the DV before being split up into 2 conditions, one goes to condition A whilst the other goes into condition B, this is to avoid the chance that they will realise the aims of the study
4
Q
What is counterbalancing
A
- an attempt to control for the effects of order in a repeated measures design, 1/2 experience it in one order and the other half in the opposite order
5
Q
1- What is a strength of independent groups design
2- What is a limitation of independent groups design
A
- order effects are not a problem, ppts are also less likely to guess aims of a study
- ppts used are not the same so the results may be because of individual differences rather than the IV
- they are also less economical
6
Q
1- What is a limitation of repeated measures
2- What is a strength of repeated measures
A
- order effects, ppts are more likely to be able to guess the aim of the study, increasing the chance of demand characteristics
- ppt variables are controlled and fewer ppts are needed
7
Q
1- What is a strength of matched pairs design
2- What is a limitation of matched pairs
A
- order effects and demand characteristics are less of a problem
- time consuming and expensive
