Self-report techniques Flashcards
What are the characteristics of an open question
- does not have a fixed range of answers
- tend to produce qualitative data, rich in depth but sometimes difficult to analyse
What are the characteristics of a closed question
- fixed number of responses
- produce quantitate data, easier to analyse but lacks depth
What are the characteristics of structured interviews
- pre-determined set of questions, asked in fixed order
What are the characteristics of unstructured interviews
- no set questions
- interactions tend to be free-flowing
- interviewee is prompted to elaborate their answers
What are the characteristics of semi-structured interviews
- list of questions but not as fixed as the interviewer can follow-up questions when they feel it is appropriate
1-What is a strength of questionnaires
2-What is a limitation of questionnaires
- cost-effective, can gather large amounts of data, straightforward to analyse
- ppts may not always be truthful, social desirability bias, often produce a respond bias and acquiescence bias
1-What is a strength of structured interviews
2-What is a limitation of structured interviews
- straightforward to replicate, individual differences are also reduced
- not possible to deviate from the topic or elaborate their points
1-What is a strength of unstructured interviews
2-What is a limitation of unstructured interviews
- more flexibility, can elaborate on points
- analysis of data is not straightforward, risk of interviewee lying for social desirability
