types of experiment Flashcards
name 2 types of data in research
quantitative, qualitative
define qualitative method
using data that is expressed in words and is non-numerical, qualitative data may be converted to numbers for the purpose of analysis
define quantitative method
using data that can be counted, usually given as numbers
name 3 common features of experiments
IV set up, DV measured, attempt to control EVS
define laboratory experiment
an experiment that takes place in a controlled environment, the researcher deliberately changes the IV and measures the effect of the IV on the DV, it is easier to control EVS in a laboratory experiment than in a field experiment
define field experiments
an experiment that takes place in a natural setting, the researcher deliberately changes the IV and measures the effect of the IV on the DV, it is more difficult to control EVS in a field experiment than in a laboratory experiment
define natural experiment
an experiment where the IV is not changed by the experimenter but would have changed whether the experimenter was interested or not, the experimenter records the effect of the change on the DV. natural experiment can take place in real life (field) or in a laboratory
name the strengths of lab experiments
EVS can be controlled which helps the experimenter establish a cause-effect relationship, can use standardised instructions because of level of control which controls EVS and the experiment can be repeated/replicated by another researcher if results same it confirms validity
name the weaknesses of lab experiments
may not be like everyday life, behavior produced in labs may not generalise that well to the wider world, participants know they are being tested which may cause them to change their behavior which is not like everyday life causing low validity
name the strengths of field experiments
often more realistic than lab experiments because they are conducted in a natural environment, participants dont know theyre being studied= behavior natural= good validity, follows standardised procedures = helps control some EVS
name the weaknesses of field experiments
researcher may lose control EVS in RL setting= difficult to show cause&effect, ethical issues
name the strengths of natural experiments
high validity cus they involve real life changes & these normally occur in a natural setting, when DV is measured in a lab there can be high level of control over EVS
name the weaknesses of natural experiments
natural event that researcher is interested in may only happen rarely= fewer opportunities for this kind of research, because of unique characteristics of participants the researcher cant randomly allocate participants to the conditions of the IV which may act as an EV & affect the results
define Validity
If the research tests what it claims to test
define Ecological validity
If you can apply the findings of the experiment to real life settings
