correlations Flashcards
define correlations
A mathematical technique used to investigate the relationship or association between two variables, called co-variables.
how do we display a correlation
scatter diagram
name the 3 types of correlations
positive, negative, zero
define positive correlations
When one variable increases as the other
increases The dots are arranged from bottom left to top right
define negative correlation
this is when one variable increases the other decreases
The dots will be arranged from top left to bottom right
define zero correlations
This is when there is no relationship between the variables
The dots show no clear pattern
strengths of correlations
Help to identify patterns in variables
It’s a good starting point that allows other research to be conducted by tweaking variables
Allows us to explore complex relationships
weaknesses of correlations
tells us there is a relationship but it doesn’t tell us HOW the variables are related
So doesn’t give us the reasons why
Also intervening variables may be overlooked, so we might be able to say that one variable effects the other but we may overlook variables that may influence it.
define scatter diagram
A type of graph that represents the Strength and direction or a relationship between co-variables in a correlation.
