hypotheses & variables Flashcards
define theory
a suggested explanation for behavior
in order name the 4 processes before we test a theory
- formulating an aim, 2. variables, 3. operationalising variables, 4. formulating a testable hypothesis
define aim
a general statement that explains the purpose of the study
define variables
anything that can vary or change within an investigation
what are the 2 key types of variables
independent variable, dependent variable
define independent variable
the thing that is varied in an experiment- either deliberately changed by the experimenter or varies naturally, there are different levels of the IV- which are called the conditions of the experiment
define dependent variable
the thing that the researcher measures in an investigation, any changes in the DV should depend on the IV and the IV alone.
define operationalisation of variables
making a variable clear and precise, make it measurable
define formulating a testable hypothesis
a testable statement that states the relationship between the two variables
what is the general rule when writing a testable hypothesis
relationship (difference or relationship) + DV + two levels (conditions) of IV
define hypothesis
a clear, precise, testable statement written at the beginning of an investigation, it states the relationship between the variables being investigated
define alternative hypothesis
a statement of the relationship (correlation or difference) between variables
define null hypothesis
a statement of no relationship (correlation or difference) between variables
