extraneous variables Flashcards
the experimenter demonstrated cause and effect if-
the only thing that has affected the DV is the IV, and that the change in the DV is due to the IV
determining cause and effect is threatened by extraneous variables
define extraneous variables
any variable apart from the IV that could have an effect on the DV, unwanted extra variables that we need to control that may interfere with relationship between the IV and the DV, IF EVS are not controlled this means the researcher cannot know what truly caused the change in the DV.
name the 3 ways psychologists can control EVS
standardised instructions, standardised procedures, randomisation
define standardised instructions
all participants should receive exactly the same information throughout an investigation
define standardised procedures
using exactly the same methods and instructions for all participants in a research study
define randomisation
using chance in an experiment to control for the effects of bias when designing a research study
define bias
a leaning in one direction rather than another
