types of data Flashcards
what is qualitative data
worded data
eg. transcript from interview
3 strengths of qualitative data
-richness of detail
-high external validity- meaningful insight into p’s worldview
-allows p’s to further develop their opinions
2 limitations of qualitative data
-hard to analyse- patterns and comparisons in data hard to identify
-conclusions are subjective- bias from researcher
what is quantitative data
numerical data which is open to statistical analysis
strength of quantitative data
statistical analysis makes it easy to compare with other data
3 limitations of quantitative data
-low exernal validity- p’s cant develop answers
-no meaningful insight into p’s views
-lack of detail depth
what is primary data (2)
-collected specifically for the research
-original, first hand data collected by researcher
eg. from interview/observation
strength of primary data
data fits the aims as its from the p’s- study specifically targets the desired info
2 limitations of primary data
-requires lots of time and effort
-studies need lots of planning, preparation, resources
what is secondary data (2)
-data collected by someone else
-has usually been subject to statistical testing
2 strengths of secondary data
-easy to access+ cheap
-desired info already exists so primary data isnt needed
2 limitations of secondary data
-substantial variation int he quality and accuracy of data
-info may be outdated/incomplete- challenges validity of conclusions
what is meta analysis (2)
-multiple studies investigating the same aim/hypothesis
-results of all studies are pooled together and a join conclusion is produced
meta analysis in experimental research (3)
-IV has been measured the same way
-so can do statistical analysis and calculate an effect size (DV of meta analysis)
-gives overall stastistical measure of difference between variables across multiple studies
2 strengths of meta analysis
allows us to create larger, more varied sample
-high external validity- results can be generalised to larger populations
