measures of central tendency and dispersion Flashcards
measures of central tendency definition
a measure which calculates an average value within a data set
how to work out mean
total of all values divide by number of values
how to work out mode
most frequently occurring value
how to work out median
arrange data from lowest to highest and find the middle value
2 strengths of mean
-makes use of all values
-good for interval data
limitation of mean
influenced by outliers (extreme scores) so can be unrepresentative
2 strengths of median
-not affected by outliers
-good for ordinal data
limitation of median
not as sensitive as mean- doesnt use all data
strength of mode
good for nominal data
limitation of mode
not useful when there are multiple modes
dispersion: how to work out range
highest score minus lowest score
strength of range
easy to calculate
2 limitations of range
-does not use all values
-affected by extreme values
dispersion: how to work out standard deviation
what is standard deviation
a single value saying how far values deviate from the mean
-larger deviation= greater spread of data
-low deviation= data is clustered close to the mean
