making participants aware of aims and procedures of study, their rights and what their data is used for

if group agrees, consent of original participants is presumed

participants agree to take part in multiple studies- including one with deception
what is retrospective consent
participants asked for consent during debriefing, having already taken part in study
-they may not have been aware they were in a study

intentionally misleading the participants
how to deal with deception
participants should be debriefed at the end of study
should be given the right to withdraw and the right to withhold data, especially if retrospective consent was given
what is protection from harm
participants shouldnt be placed at more risk than they are in everyday life
should be physically and psychologically protected
how to deal with protection from harm
remind participants they have right to withdraw throughout study
offer counselling
what is privacy and confidentiality
-participants have the right to control their own info- privacy
-if privacy is invaded, confidentiality should be protected
how to deal with confidentiality
-can record no personal details in the first place- anonymity
-during debriefing, remind participants data is protected
