Types of data Flashcards
Types of data?
- Categorical
- Numeric
Types of categorical data?
- Nominal
- Ordinal
Types of numeric data?
- Continuous
- Discrete
Sub-type of nominal data?
Binary
Nominal data?
Nominal data is data that can be labelled or classified into mutually exclusive categories within a variable.
What is the criteria of nominal data?
- Mutual Exclusive Categories
- No order to the categories
Binary data?
a statistical data type consisting of categorical data that can take exactly two possible values, such as “A” and “B”, or “heads” and “tails”. It is also called dichotomous data
Ordinal data?
Ordinal data is a type of qualitative (non-numeric) data that groups variables into descriptive categories. A distinguishing feature of ordinal data is that the categories it uses are ordered on some kind of hierarchical scale, e.g. high to low
What are the features of ordinal data?
- Mutually exclusive categories
- Logical Ordering to the catergories
Numeric data?
Numerical data refers to the data that is in the form of numbers, and not in any language or descriptive form.
Continuous data?
Continuous data is data that can take any value within in a measuring range.
What is precision and range dependent on?
- Range
- Precision of the measuring device
Discrete data?
Discrete data is a type of quantitative data that includes nondivisible figures and statistics you can count.
Levels of measurement for categorical?
Nominal: Name only
Ordinal: Name + Ordered
Levels of measurement for numeric?
Interval: named+ordered+equal distance between intervals
Ratio: named+ordered+equal distance between intervals + True Zero
