What is the function and structure of a long bone?
Long bones are hard and dense to provide strength, structure and mobility. Long bones consist of a shaft and two ends.

Femur and phalanges

Short bones are made up of spongy bone with a hard outer layer of compact bone to support and keep the area stable. Short bones have a cube-like shape.

Carpal bones (scapiod etc) and tarsal bones (talus etc)

Flat bones have a layer of spongy bone between two layers of compact bone to protect organs or provide connection points. They also have a thin and flattened structure.

Irregular bones are composed of spongy bone with a hard outer layer to protect tissues, provide attachments and shape the body. Irregular bones have complex shapes.

Sesamoid bones are found embedded within tendons to protect the tendon from wear. They are usually small and oval-shaped.
