What is flexion?
Flexion is when a joint angle is decreased; bending the elbow or knee.
What is extension?
Extension is when the joint angle opens up; straightening the elbow or knee.
What is hyperextension?
Hyperextension is when the joint goes beyond its normal range of movement.
What is rotation?
Rotation is a rotary movement inward (medial) or outward (lateral); rotation of thoracic vertebrae.
What is dorsiflexion?
Dorsiflexion is when the toes are brought up to the shin; running and bringing our foot up.
What is plantarflexion?
Plantarflexion is when the toes are pointed down; standing on the tip of your toes.
What is elevation?
Elevation is a superior movement at a joint; shrugging your shoulders.
What is depression?
Depression is a inferior movement at a joint; mandible when talking.
What is circumduction?
Circumduction is a circular movement like the joint is making a circle in the air; shoulder joint when a cricketer bowls.
What is abduction?
Abduction is when the joint moves away from the vertical midline of the body; sidesteps.
What is adduction?
Adduction is when the joint moves towards and across the vertical midline of the body; sidesteps.
What is pronation?
Pronation is when the wrist is turned inwards so you cannot see the palm of your hand.
What is supanation?
Supanation is when the wrist is turned outwards so the palm is visible.
What is inversion?
Inversion is when the ankle is rolled towards the midline medial action; common in sprains.
