Type of Proteins and Their Jobs Flashcards
Integral Proteins
Integral proteins are embedded in the bilayer. Have at least one region that interacts with the hydrophobic core.
Generally span the entire membrane
Peripheral
Peripheral proteins are positioned on surface of the membrane, do not act with the core of the membrane.
Held to membrane by non-covalent bonds (hydrogen and ionic)
Membrane Protein Jobs (Transport)
Transport roteins create hydrophilic channels for some molecules to cross the membrane
(Passive and active transport)
Membrane Protein Jobs (Enzymatic Activity)
Enzymatic activity proteins bind to molecules and allow them to undergo chemical reactions easier so that they can eventually pass through the membrane.
Membrane Protein Jobs (Triggering Signals)
Triggering Signals may bind to chemicals to start a chain of events in the cell, through communicating from one side of the cell to the other
Membrane Protein Jobs (Attachment and Recognition)
Attachment and recognition proteins on both ends of the cell membrane can bond to each other and the ECM, creating tissue; can also attach to invading cells
