Plant Tissues Flashcards
Plant cells
Contain a cell wall (for support), large VACUOLE (for water storage and support) and CHLOROPLASTS (for photosynthesis)
However, even these structures vary depending on the cell
Plant Tissue (meristematic)
Produce meristematic cells, which can become any specialized cell
Similar to our STEM CELLS
Usually located at root and shoot TIPS (what causes longer growth)
Plant tissue (dermal)
Outer covering of plant
Provides protective covering (like our skin)
Replaced by PERIDERM tissue in woody plants
Specialized dermal tissue/cells include GUARD CELLS (control openings in leaf), DEFENCE CELLS (thorns) and ROOT HAIRS (increase surface area)
PLant tissue (ground)
Forms most of plant’s internal and external structure, especially young plants
Functions include storage, photosynthesis and support
Plant Tissue (vascular)
Internal system of tubes (like our circulatory/digestive system)
XYLEM – transports WATER/MINERALS from roots to leaves…UPWARD DIRECTION
PHLOEM – Transports nutrients to where they are needed…including back to roots. (typically sugars made during photosynthesis)
