Passive Transport Flashcards
Homeostasis
Homeostasis is the steady-state that maintains near-constant conditions in the internal environment of a living thing despite changes in the external environment. Cell membrane maintains homeostasis inside a cell
Diffusion
Diffusion is when molecules can move directly through the phospholipids of the plasma membrane.
Diffusion is the net movement of molecules from a High to Low concentration until equally distributed.
Related to temperature, pressure, state of matter, concentration gradient, and surface area of membrane
Osmosis
Osmosis is the diffusion of water.
Water Molecules can move directly through the phospholipids of the plasma membrane. Movement from an area of high to low concentration of water.
Three types: isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic
Osmosis (Isotonic)
Water concentrations are the same in the intracellular fluid and extracellular fluid.
The cell will have no net movement of water and will stay the same size.
Osmosis (Hypotonic)
Water concentration in the extracellular fluid is greater than in the intracellular fluid, causing the water to move into the cell. The cell will gain water and swell.
If the cell bursts, then we call this lysis.
In-plant cells with rigid cell walls, this creates turgor pressure
Osmosis (Hypertonic)
Water concentration in intracellular fluid is greater than extracellular fluid. The cell will lose water and shrink a.k.a plasmolysis.
In-plant cells, the central vacuole will shrink causing wilting
Facilitated Diffusion
Facilitated Diffusion is when molecules can move through the plasma membrane with the aid of transport proteins. Used for large, water-soluble, or charged substances.
Passive movement with the HELP of a protein
Transport Proteins (Carrier Proteins)
Carrier proteins are used for large, uncharged molecules depending on their shape to function properly
Accept only uncharged molecules with a specific shape
Transport Proteins (Channel Proteins)
Channel Proteins are tunnel shape to allow ions (charged molecules) to pass the bilayer.
Selects for certain ions (must have a specific charge).
Also allows water to pass through at a faster rate.
