Cells, Tissues, and Organs Flashcards
Specialized Cells
Each cell has chemical and physical differences (controlled by DNA coding and protein expression) that allow for specific functions.
Specialized cells derive from stem cells.
Tissues
Specialized cells that are the SAME working together form TISSUES.
There are four basic types of animal cell tissue: muscle, epithelial, connective, and nervous
Tissues (muscle tissue)
Lets body parts move and change shape but they do not tear easily.
Generate high ATP amounts.
Tissue (muscle tissue types)
Skeletal- muscle tissue attached to the bone; movement of these muscles is VOLUNTARY (you have control over these muscles)
Cardiac muscle- muscle that’s exclusive to the heart (stronger and longer lasting than any other muscle type)
Smooth- muscles that are INVOLUNTARY, and move without any input from you
Tissues (Epithelial Tissue)
Covers the external and internal body structures
Flat and thin, like skin cells.
Tissues (Connective tissue)
Supports and connects cells and tissues
Tissues (Nervous tissue)
Senses and passes along information.
Organs
Made up of different tissues working together to perform a task
The same tissues do not have to make up an organ (can have multiple tissue types)
Multiple organs working together called an organ system
