Circulatory System Flashcards
Hearts location and function
Just behind and slightly left of the breastbone
Pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system
Transports nutrients, oxygen, and hormones to cells throughout the body + removal of metabolic wastes
Hearts tissues and roles of the tissue
Muscle Tissue: cardiac muscle tissue exclusive to the heart, responsible for keeping the heart pumping
Connective Tissue: prevents signals from passing too quickly from the atria to the ventricles
Nervous Tissue: responsible for communication in the heart to the brain
Hearts structures and how it allows it to perform its function
The organ is divided into several chambers that take in and distribute oxygen-poor or oxygen-rich blood. These chambers are accompanied by veins and arteries that facilitate the same function.
Bloods location and function
- Blood circulates throughout all parts of the human body.
- Transports and provides oxygen, cells, and nutrients (glucose, amino acids) to the body.
- Recognize and destroy invading bacteria and viruses.
- Forms blood clots
Bloods tissues and roles of the tissue
Connective tissue: blood is made entirely of connective tissue as blood connects all of the body’s systems and organs, bringing them the oxygen and nutrients that they need.
Bloods structures and how it allows it to perform its function
- Its liquid form allows it to travel through the body easily, making transporting things such as oxygen and nutrients much easier.
- Red blood cells have a biconcave shape that maximizes the surface area to increase the efficiency of oxygen absorption. Its shape also allows it to ‘‘squeeze’’ through narrow vessels and can enter even the thinnest capillaries around the body.
Veins location and function
- Veins are all over the body in a network of thin blood vessels, connecting to all tissues that needs oxygen and blood to function. (Blue vessels)
- The Veins take the blood cells with low oxygen back to the heart so they could regain oxygen and recycle back into the system.
Veins tissues and roles of the tissue
- Veins are made up of smooth muscle tissue because it contracts and pushes the blood back where it has to be involuntary. It also has connective tissue to exchange blood cells with the arteries which are connected by capillaries.
Veins structures and how it allows it to perform its function
- The vein is a tube-like muscle that allows the blood a path to flow back into the heart. With the use of valves, so it can stop the backflow of blood due to gravity. The veins are larger closer to the heart and get smaller and thinner as it goes away.
Capillaries location and function
- Every part of the body has a network of capillary vessels to supply blood.
- Where oxygen and nutrients are exchanged for carbon dioxide and waste.
- Oxygen and nutrients from the blood move through them to get to organs and tissues.
Capillaries tissues and roles of the tissue
- Lining of the capillaries is made of epithelial tissue. Makes a small channel so red blood cells can flow through them.
- Connective tissues. Capillaries exchange materials through the blood.
Capillaries structures and how it allows it to perform its function
- Have thin, permeable walls so blood, oxygen, and carbon dioxide can diffuse between. cells and vessels
