Type 2 diabetes Flashcards
What is type 2 diabetes?
Body makes insulin but the cells don’t respond and are insulin resistant.
Epidemiology of type 2 diabetes?
Takes place in older people
Risk factors of type 2 diabetes?
1) Older age
2) Obesity
3) High carbs
4) Ethnicity
5) lifestyle
Pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes?
Body tries to make more insulin so that glucose can move to cells. This done by beta cells doing hyperplasia and hypertrophy. This is where beta cells increase and grow in size. This works for a while as blood glucose levels are normal. What happens after a while is beta cells also release amylin and that builds up. What happens is beta cells get tired and start to get smaller and die off. This causes build of glucose in blood known as hyperglycimia.
What happens during hyperosmolar and hyperglycaemic state.
Cauese increase plasma osmality from dehydration and increase blood concenetration.
when theres high level glucose in blood water moves from cells into blood.
Leads to increase urination = severe dehydration.
This can get serious as can cause mental status changes.
Symptoms + management + treatment ?
Same as type 1 diabetes.
