Hyperaldosteronism Flashcards
Definition of primary hyperaldosteronism?
Where adrenal gland is directly responsible for increase aldostrone secretion, happens due to a adrenal adenoma.
Definition of secondary hyperaldosteronism?
Where aldosterone is excessively produced due to increase renin levels.
Pathophysiology of hyperaldosteronism?
Kidney release renin which changes into angiotensin which causes adrenal glands zona glomerulosa to release aldosterone.
What is conns syndrome?
where there is a aldosterone secreting tumour on adrenal gland releasing increased aldosterone.
what causes primary hyperaldosteronism?
Aldosterone secreting tumour on adrenal gland
Biolateral adrenal hyperplasia
Adrenal carcinoma
what causes secondary hyperaldosteronism?
Excess aldosterone production due to high levels of renin
can happen due to chronic low blood pressure
what causes secondary hyperaldosteronism?
Excess aldosterone production due to high levels of renin
can happen due to chronic low blood pressure
What are hyperaldostorism symptoms?
Hypokalemia = low potassium in blood
hypernatremia = high sodium in blood
Hyper tension = high blood pressure
how to diagnose Hyperaldostorism?
Check renin aldosterone ratio
Renin low + Aldosterone High = primary
Renin high + Aldosterone High = secondary
Treatment for hyperaldostronism?
Aldosterone antagonist like:
Eplerenone
Spironolactone
Surgically remove tumour
How is hyperaldosteronism linked to hyper tension?
it is most common cause of secondary hypertension due to high plood pressure
