Tulving And Psotka (1971) Flashcards
Tulving And Psotka aim
To research if interference is only temporary
Tulving And Psotka procedure
They gave the participants lists of words, organised into different categories, one list at a time to memorise for a memory test. The participants were not told the categories. They were then given another memory test and told the different categories
Tulving And Psotka findings
Average recall was around 70% for the first lisrt and became progressively worse with each additional list. Sith the other memory test, when the participants knew the categories, the recall rose again to around 70%
Tulving And Psotka importance
It shows that inference causes temporary loss of accessibility to memories that are still in the LTM
Tulving And Psotka strength
The study shows that there is a way to stop interference
It shows that by grouping pieces of information or adding other cues, the inference can be overcome and the memroies become accessible again
This is important because the theory of inference had not predicted this before the study, so this helped psychologists better understand inference
Tulving And Psotka limitation
This study does not have much mundane realism
There are not many times in daily life where people need to remember lists of words with seemingly no relation, so this study can’t be applied to other situations
This shows that the study has very low external valididty
