Minority Influence Flashcards
Minority influence
A form of social influence where a minority of people persuade others to adopt their beliefs, attitudes or behaviours
What does minority influence lead to
Internalisation
Consistency
When they have the same beliefs overtime and between all members of the minority
Commitment
More powerful if the minority is dedicated
Why is commitment effective
It shows the minority is not acting out of self-interest
Flexibility
Consistency could be counter-productive if it is seen as rigid and unreasonable . Accept the possibility of compromise
Synchronic consistency
They are all saying the same thing
Diachronic consistency
They have been saying the same thing for a long time
Augmentation principle
The idea that we should assign a greater weight to one cause of behaviour if there are other causes that would normally give the opposite outcome
Who argued that consistency is not the only important factor in minority influence because it can be off-putting
Charles Nemeth
Moscovici et al
- 6 people in a group were asked to view a set of 36 blue slides
- 2 confederates said the slides were green
- the real participants gave the same wrong answer on 8.42% of the trials
- the second group had an inconsistent minority
- the agreement with the wrong answer fell to 1.25%
