Tuberculosis Flashcards
Who gets the BCG vaccine?
Travellers to endemic areas or children in high risk groups.
Doesn’t prevent infection, just prevents serious disease
Is latent TB treatment different to active? How so?
Yes. It is usually mono therapy with either isoniazid or rifampicin.
What is DOT
Directly observed therapy. Health professional watches the patient take their therapy
Why is combo therapy indicated?
Because resistance develops very quickly in ACTIVE TB
Name a potential drug that could be used in MDR TB
Moxifloxacin (in combo with other options)
MDR TB is TB that is resistant to at least which two drugs?
Isoniazid and rifampicin.
Why is the SAS often needed for TB drugs?
Because TB isn’t very common in Australia, so neither are the drugs. Need to ensure you are sourcing the drugs from a country with high regulatory standards
