Trophy Flashcards
What is -trophy?
the process of feeding
all organism do it
How are organisms named based on lifestyle?
All organisms can be grouped by methods they use to solve their feeding needs
* some organisms can switch their methods
What are the 3 needs of all organisms?
- Energy- needed for work
- Electrons- need for reduction
- Reduced Carbon- need for biosynthesis
What is energy need for and where is it store?
for development, growth, movement, and chemical reactions
-is stored as potential energy in bonds of carbs and protiens
Naming by energy source
- energy source + troph
1. Phototrophs- get energy from sunlight
2. Chemotrophs- get energy from oxidation of electron donors
What is electron need and what is used for?
Needed in redox reactions that involve energy transfer
distinction needs to be made in chemotrophs
Naming by electron needs
Organotrophs: get e- from organic source
Lithotrophs: get e- from inorganic compounds
What is reduced carbon needs?
Used in the synthesis of biological molecules
-needed to produce all 4 biomolecules (protiens, carbs, fats, nucleic acids)
Naming by reduced carbon needs
Autotrophs: get their carbon from CO2
Heterotrophs: Get their carbon needs from other organic compounds
What makes chemolithoautotrophs distinct?
- Don’t rely on sun
- Don’t consume photoautotrophs or heterotrophs
- make it a possibility for life on other planets
Mostly bacteria or extremophiles , eat ROCKS
