Molecular Phylogenetics Flashcards
What are the steps of molecular phylogenetics ?
- Get DNA sequence
- Compare them
- Make a tree based on nucleotide sequence
What is molecular phylogenetics?
Compares DNA sequences b/w organisms
Phylogenetic tree
-Can contain info about evolutionary distance by length of branches
Vs cladogram where lengths are arbitrary no meaning
Meaning of Phylogenetic tree branches
- Length= evolutionary distance
- describe by time/ number of changes
- number of changes described morphologically or by nucleotide sequence
What is bifurcation & when is it used?
- the division of something into 2 branches or parts
- used by cladistics
What is multifurcation and when is it used?
- Division of something into more than 2+ branches or parts
- used by molecular methods
- acceptable
Rooted tree
One unique node on tree is common ancestor of everything else on tree
- typically an out group
- has a root
What is unrooted tree
Depicts relationships b/w members w/out a common ancestor
-typically through computational methods
What is computational phylogenetics?
-algorithms: process or set of rules to be followed in calculations can be used for morphological/molecular data
-morphological: must pick and define characters to make a tree
-molecular: characters already defined
MUST BE HOMOLOGOUS
Define parsimony.
The adoption of the simplest assumption in the interpretation of data
-occham’s razor
Define Occham’s razor
Principle stating that the hypothesis that has the fewest assumptions is best
What is traditional phylogenetics?
Uses morphology to make tree
What is molecular phylogenetics?
Uses nucleotide sequences to make trees
