Protists Flashcards
Define protozoans
unicellular eukaryotic heterotrophs usually mobile
Define protists
Are single celled eukaryotes including protozoans and algae.
Define protista
Kingdom level taxanomic unit composed of protists.
What is Wastebasket Taxa
It is used to classify organisms that do NOT belong anywhere else “cop out”
-Many eukaryotes are not considered plants, animals, or fungi –> lumped
What are this dont belong anywhere eukaryotes?
They are typically called protist
- single celled eukaryotes= WRONG
- Eukaryotic Microbes= WRONG
- Tissue-less eukaryotes
Define Tissue.
A group of specialized cells from the same origin performing the same function
What is the multicellular hierarchy
- Tissues are made of cells
- organs are made of tissues
- Biological systems are made of organs
- Organisms are made of biological systems
What is the exception to tissueless eukaryotes aka protists
Volvox
- acts as a tissue
- made up of chlamydomonas stuck together
- have specialized reproduction cells
- can be diecious
Define Monoecious
Species are hermaphroditic and contain ALL sexes
Define Dioecious
species are divided into 2 genders
what are the features of Protist:Amoeba?
Genus level= Taxon
- Has no definite shape
- Moves by psuedopods
- Have 10x the human genome
- Thought to be asexual but that is now changing
What are the features of Protist:Euglena
-Unicellular & flagellated can be either 1.chemoorganoheterotrophy or 2. Photoautotrophy -Thought to be asexual but now is changing
What are the features of Protist: Paramecia
- Unicellular and cilliated
- Multiple Nuclei
- Have sex
