Microevolution Flashcards
1
Q
What is microevolution?
A
A change in allele frequencies within a population
2
Q
Define Alleles
A
alternative forms of the same gene “flavors”
arise from differences in DNA sequence
3
Q
Define population
A
Population is a group of localized individuals capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring
4
Q
what are the 3 mechanisms of microevolution?
A
- Natural selection
- Genetic drift
- Genetic flow
5
Q
Define Natural selection
A
Natural selection in the process by which certain traits become more or less common.
6
Q
Define Genetic drift
A
- Changes in allele in population due to randomness
- -> May cause alleles to dissapear
- Founder effect
- Bottleneck
7
Q
Define Genetic flow
A
Is that transfer of alleles from one population to another through -reproduction -pollen -horizontal gene transfer --can reduce homogenize fitness
8
Q
What are the differences b/w macro and microevolution?
A
-Microevolution occurs in a smaller scale within a population but macroevolution occurs @ species level (ecologically)
