what is a TLP?
Troop leading procedures are a DYNAMIC PROCESS USED BY SMALL UNIT LEADERS TO ANALYZE A MISSION, develop a plan and prepare for an operation. These procedures enable leaders to maximize available planning time while developing effective plans and preparing their units for an operation
What are the troop leading procedures
- Receive the mission
- Issue the warno
- Make tentative plan
- Initiate movement
- Conduct recon
- Complete the plan
- Issue the order
- Supervise and refine
When you receive the mission there are 3 types of tasks, what are they?
Specified tasks: clearly stated
Implied tasks: become apparent as OPORD is analyzed, not inherent, routine or SOP (they are necessary to complete the task)
Mission essential task: must be executed to accomplish the mission
When do you issue the WARNO?
As soon as possible - dont wait for more info
What form does a WARNO follow?
5 paragraph OPORD
Situation Mission Execution Sustainment Command and control
What is step 3, make a tentative plan?
Combines MDP steps 2-6:
- mission analysis
- COA development
- COA analysis
- COA comparison
- COA approval
What form does make a tentative plan follow?
METT-TC
Mission
Enemy
Terrain
Troops
Time
Civilian considerations
When do you Initiate Movement?
As soon as you have enough info or when you are required to for a task
What is conduct recon?
At minimum map recon
But more is more better
What are different types of recon?
Map
Terrain model
Aerial photo
Ground
What is involved in Complete the plan?
Leaders incorporate results of recon into COA to do the shit
May include:
- overlays
- coordinating sustainment w signal
- updating tentative plan (2/2 recon)
Ideally make final coordination w adjacent units and higher before issuing the order
How do you issue the order?
5 paragraph OPORD format
- Situation
- Mission
- Execution
- Sustainment
- Command and control
Good OPORDs are/have?
Clarity Complete and brief Timely Allow initiative Affirmative and authoritative Use terrain model during brief (not afterthought)
Examples of supervise and refine?
Make changes PRN during TLP
PCC, PCI
Rehersals
Why conduct rehearsals?
- Practice essential tasks
- ID weakness with plan
- Coordinate w subordinate elements
- Improve soldier understanding of Concept of operation
- Foster confidence in plan
