Not sulphonamide . acts synergistically with some sulphonamides
Mode of action ?
Acts by inhibtion of Dihydrofolate reductase with affinity for bacterial enzemes 50000 times that for humans .
Spectrum ?
Is apotent broad spectrum bacteriostatic agent

Uses ?
Used for UTI and for prophylaxis of UTI
Why we give it with same sulphonamide?
Emergence of resistant strains is increasing so is usually used in combination with sulphonamide, to give synergistic action .
Adverse effects ?
1- GIT disturbances including : anorexia , nausea and vomitting
2- hypersesitivity : ueticaria , skin rash , photesensitisty
3- Crystalluria may accur if adequate amount of water is not taken during therapy
4- haematopoeitic disturbances : acute haemolytic anaemia , agranulocytosis , aplastic anaemia
