Trigeminal Neuralgia Flashcards
What is trigeminal neuralgia?
Compression on the trigeminal nerve
What is usually responsible for compression of the trigeminal nerve?
Blood vessels
- Aneurysm
Tumour
Chronic meningitis
MS
Symptoms?
Intense unilateral stabbing pain
Short time
Where is the pain most intense?
Maxillary
Mandibular division
Signs?
Screwed up face from the pain
DDx?
THIS IS THE DDx FOR ALL THE NEURALGIFORM HEADACHES
Longest = cluster headache (15-300 mins)
Longer = trigeminal neuralgia (also more around the mandible than opthalmic area)
Middle = paroxysmal hemicrania (2-30 mins)
Shortest = SUNCT (10 - 240 seconds)
Surgical treatment?
Resection of tumours
Decompression surgery
Pharma treatment?
Glycerol ganglion injection
- Glycerol is neurolytic
Analgesia
