Sensation (SHAPES)

A

The ability of the skin to feel rough, smooth, sharp, hot, cold (from nerve endings in the dermis)

Heat Regulation (SHAPES)

A

Regulates the body temperature through a process called ‘homeostasis’ using blood flow and sweat (perspiration)

Absorption (SHAPES)

A

Absorbs through open glands called pores. (these cause pimples when blocked). Can absorb creams, ointments and antiseptics. Also sunlight.

Protection (SHAPES)

A

Protection from pathogens (bacteria/viruses), water, extreme temperatures and injuries. Protective coating called the ‘acid-mantle’.

Sebum secreted from the sebaceous gland (oil gland) and becomes acid-mantle. Puts a waterproof coating on skin.

Epidermis

A

The top layer of the skin. Made from 5 layers out of Keratin.

A

Second main division of skin. Called ‘true skin’. 2 layers directly under the Epidermis.

Subcutaneouos Layer

A

Fatty tissue. Directly underneath the dermis, covering the bones. Insulates and protects the bones.

Papillary layer

A

Top layer of the Dermis. Shallow, feeds the basil layer, and carries nourishment to the Epidermis.

Reticular layer

A

Bottom layer of Dermis. Most of the Dermis is Reticular. Contains blood vessels, veins, nerves, hair follicles, suderiferous + sebaceous glands and muscles.

Stratum Corneum

A

Dead and Shed. Top layer of Epidermis. Made from flat cells and takes 1 month to get from the bottom to the top

Stratum Lucidum

A

Feet and Hands. Thick and transparent, second layer of Epidermis.

Stratum granulosum

A

Third layer of Epidermis. Thin layer of cells, losing moisture and dying. Those with Psoriasis don’t have it.

Stratum spinosum

A

Fourth layer of Epidermis. A ‘spiny’ appearance. Melanin granules enter these cells. Living part of the Epidermis.

Stratum Germinativum

A

Colour. Lowest (5th) layer of Epidermis. Where the cells divide and move upwards. Naturally contains melanin. Flattens old cells as they push up, and fed by the Basil cells.
