Tri A - Membrane Function Flashcards
What are the 4 types of diffusion?
- Diffusion through pores
- Dissolving in Lipid Portion of membrane
- Carrier-Mediated
- Active Transport
Describe Diffusion Through Pores
Water and other polar molecules can pass through membrane
Describe Diffusion Through Lipid Membrane
The molecule must be lipid soluble
If a dissolved molecule comes in contact with the lipid layer, it may cross
Describe Carrier-Mediated Diffusion
The molecule binds to a carrier protein which allows it to diffuse across the membrane
Why do we need Active Transport?
To maintain the difference between the inside and outside of the cell
What is the name for the active transport systems?
Membrane Pumps
How do membrane pumps work?
They transport one molecule out of the cell at the same rate they transport another molecule in
