Tri A - Cells Flashcards
What are organelles?
The internal Structures of a cell
What is the cell membrane made of?
Phospholipid bilayer, embedded proteins, attached carbohydrates
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls entry and exit of materials
Barrier between outside and inside of cell
What is the Cytoplasm made of?
Cell contents; Organelles and Cytosol
What is the function of the Cytoplasm?
Site of chemical reactions
What are ribosomes made of?
Composed of 2 sub-units, 1 large and 1 small
What is the function of Ribosomes?
Site of protein synthesis
What is the structure of the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Network of folded membranes (flattened sacs or tubules)
What is the function of the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Rough ER - protein synthesis
Smooth ER - stores calcium ions
What is the structure of the Golgi Complex?
Flattened membranous sacs bulging at edges
What is the function of the Golgi Complex?
Modifies and packages proteins
Some packaged into vesicles
What is the function of Lysosomes?
Contain digestive enzymes and break down materials inside the cell
What is the function of Peroxisomes?
Oxidise organic substances for detoxification
What is the function of Proteasomes?
Digest unneeded, damaged and faulty proteins
What is the function of Granules?
Contains food stores
