Trauma Xray Interpretation - Upper Limb Flashcards
What 3 things should be used to guid XRay interpretation
- Mechanism of injry (high/ low veolcity or impaction/ rotation/ distraction)
- site of bone tenderness / presence of deformity
- Patient Age
Why is 1 view rarely enough
Fractures may be invisible
Alignment cannot be fully assessed
In what 2 cases do we require more than 2 views
Cervical spine and Scaphoid
What views are required for Cervical spine
AP
Lateral
Odontoid peg
What views are required for Scaphoid
AP
Lateral
two obliques
How do we image the odontoid peg
With the move open (so the teeth are out of the way
What do sesamoid bones help to do
They help tendons to slide over bones without friction
When might a fat pad become visible in an upper limb XRay
If an elbow effusion is present - e.g. through trauma
In what way are childrens bones different to adults
The can bend or bow rather than snap and spliter
What is a Radial buckle fracture
The normal metaphysis should have a concave contour but in a radial buckle fracture there is an abnormal bump
WHat is the growth plate
a lucency between the epiphysis and metaphysis that may simulate a fracture
Why is the growth plate prone to injury
It is the weakest part of a developing bone
What classification is used to grade growth plate fractures
Salter Harris
If a carer’s story does not fit the injury, what should you suspect
Non accidental injury (NAI)
Give 4 examples of bony rings
Spinal canal
Pelvis
Forearm
